Of all the incredible things to do in the Columbia River Gorge, hiking is one of our favorites. We’ve spent many years taking one hike after another on both sides of the Gorge and frequently recommend our favorites to our guests. One of our favorite Gorge hikes is The Dog Mountain Trail, which offers breathtaking views of Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge. Better yet, it’s one of our favorite hikes when looking for Washington wildflowers in the spring.

The Dog Mountain Trail is a 6-mile loop trail in Carson, Washington, not too far from our luxury cabins in Washington. Not only is the Dog Mountain Trail one of the most popular Gorge hikes, but it’s also one of our favorites for spotting Washington wildflowers in the spring. In particular, this hike is sought-out for its bright yellow pops of color from the Arrowleaf Balsamroot wildflower, a relative of sunflowers.
You’ll have plenty of shade as you hike through the trees for the first mile or so on the Dog Mountain Trail. After only 1.5 miles, you’ll be rewarded with your first view of the hike, where you can see the Columbia River, Wind Mountain, and even the top of Dog Mountain, where you’re heading.
At around 2.5 miles into the Dog Mountain Trail, you’ll come across an old fire lookout station that was built in 1931. It’s a great place to take a break if needed, but you’re only 0.5 miles from the top, where the real views are waiting! The Dog Mountain Trail is considered a challenging hike, but the friendly Washington wildflowers and the breathtaking views from the top are more than worth the effort. Once you get to the top of this steep trail, you’ll find one of the best views of the Columbia River Gorge, with Mount Hood in the distance.
This is one of the many Gorge hikes that are best taken in the earlier part of the day, especially as things heat up in the summer. Not only does it get hot, but parking can be limited at the Dog Mountain Trail. The earlier you start, the more likely you are to secure parking. You’ll also need a parking permit to access the Dog Mountain Trail.
